        马丁·艾米斯是享有国际声誉的当代英国小说家,其作品或多或少体现了米哈伊尔·巴赫金的对话思想。其中,第五部小说《金钱——绝命书》尤为典型。该小说的主人公兼叙述者约翰·塞尔夫的独白潜藏着深刻的对话性。在《金钱》中,各种声音进行着对话式互动。尽管如此,小说中的对话现象却未得到应有的关注。长期以来,对话被视为实实在在的日常交流,巴赫金则将对话的意义扩展到人类存在的层面。本文将运用巴赫金的对话理论,探讨《金钱》中的主人公塞尔夫在金钱社会中丧失自我之后,如何通过与自己、与第二性作者、与读者进行的三层对话,追寻自我,最终重建和谐、独立的主体身份。小说中的三层对话相互关联,集中表现为金钱、色情、自由、爱情四种声音间的对话与冲突。《金钱》反映了在深刻的经济根源导致社会堕落的情况下,现代人丧失自我的窘境。在此,对话不再是简单的言语交流,而成为一种建构身份的重要话语策略。《金钱》展现了塞尔夫通过对话追寻和谐身份的不懈努力,最终揭示出作者马丁·艾米斯对资本主义消费文化中人类丧失自我的关切。
    Martin Amis,a British novelist with an international appeal,has written novels articulating a perspective with affinities to Mikhail Bakhtin’s dialogic imaginative principles,among which Money: A Suicide Note,his fifth novel,is a case in point.In this novel,the protagonist-narrator John Self’s soliloquies are profoundly dialogic.Dialogic interplay of different voices is found to figure prominently in Money,but receives little attention.In general,dialogue refers to the daily conversation,and with Bakhtin’s contribution,the meaning of dialogue is extended to include a master principle governing human existence.Based on Bakhtin’s dialogism,this thesis explores how the protagonist Self in Money struggles and manages to form his independent identity through and in three interrelated but distinctive levels of dialogue—respectively Self’s dialogue with himself,Self’s dialogue with the secondary author,and Self’s dialogue with readers.Throughout the three levels of dialogue,four voices—money,pornography,freedom,and love—dialogically interact with each other.It can be concluded that the dialogue in Money is not only a verbal communication,but also a significant discursive strategy for those who have lost their selves in the money world to form their identities.Presenting Self’s great efforts to establish his coherent identity by means of dialogue,Money ultimately reveals Martin Amis’ s deep concern over the human beings who have lost their selves under the conditions of capitalism and consumerism.
